I agree, it's so out of left field. I was a huge fan of his features on Kanye's MBDTF and Yeezus especially. Glad he dedicated a whole work to that kind of direction. Also think he crafted it very well. So many musicians have good intentions in trying things that are so polarizing and different but few can actually pull it off.
but to me, this music just wreaks of "oh this music is so hot and edgy, right now"
not a fan of what I've heard so far

Also I'm surprised that the first song you recommended to me is one where he is singing in his stupid black Micky Mouse voice.
I hate this surge of everyone on the internet calling anything that isn't the mainstream movement right no "edgy". So cringe.
That aside, yodda, I can understand if you don't like it but I've followed Justin Vernon's projects from pretty much his beginnings (idk where you stand in that spectrum) and this is really the first time in his personal work where he's really broken out of his shell and did something less conventional thatnhis go to wallowing genre (which I love as well). Bon Iver has always been "out there" or "indie" or "underground folk" or whatever people want to call him, but this direction, to me, was really surprising and worked out well.
This album took three years to make so I don't consider him hopping on any bandwagon or trying to be like anyone else. Don't forget though that this is the dude who wrote his grainy love ballads in the isolation of a cabin in the hills. He's been out there since he's been anything at all.
