Tom DeLonge Talks “Love”

From Billboard.com:

Angels & Airwaves’ Prog Rock ‘Love’ Album, Film To Be Released For Free

Even as he prepares for blink-182′s summer reunion tour, guitarist Tom DeLonge is deeply ensconced in the next project by his other band, Angels & Airwaves — an album and film project called “Love” that should be out before the end of the year.

DeLonge tells Billboard.com that “Love” — which will be released for free thanks to corporate underwriting — is “the biggest release of my life, the pinnacle of my creativity” and likens it to Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” in the scope of its ambition. “It’s super conceptual and highbrow in many ways, very artistic, very Stanley Kubrick,” he says. “But it’s not a rock opera. It’s a very modern version of what could happen when you blend the film industry and the music industry together in a very, very arty, kind of cool way with professionals involved all along the path.”

DeLonge says the “Love” movie — which began life as a documentary about Angels & Airwaves recording its 2006 debut album, “We Don’t Need to Whisper,” and expanded from there — “blurs the line between full-fledged live action and documentary with these epic kind of…meditative sequences where the sound design and the music and the picture all bend together to create a sonic experience as much as a visual one.” The script, meanwhile, “tells a story of human life and destiny but at the same time really makes usual moments of life extraordinary. It’s a circular narrative in many ways, where it kind of sums up the human race in a time capsule.”

The music of “Love,” DeLonge says, will have a prog-rock kind of flavor. “It’s like blending Radiohead and U2 together with these kind of Pink Floyd movements,” he explains. “Things happen unpredictably and take you to these epic soundscapes. It’s very much in the spirit of Angels & Airwaves, but it sounds way, way more thought-out and way more ambitious.”

DeLonge says the group is still figuring out mechanisms for delivering the film and album and are also planning a tour to support the project. All of this, of course, is going on while he rehearses for the blink-182 tour, which begins July 23 in Las Vegas.

“It’s gonna be a really busy time — It’s fucking crazy, actually. I don’t know what I’m doing,” DeLonge says with a laugh. “But I’m totally down and excited to figure out how to make it all happen, ’cause in my life both of these (bands) can be a very necessary thing.”

he’s very good at using lots of words to describe NOTHING.

  • grace

    Sounds very ambitious!

  • Orian

I’ll believe it’s free when they actually release it. Until then I’m assuming it’s free only to Modlife subscribers.

    Kay ^

    agreed

  • http://www.twitter.com/nickglavin Nick Glavin

wait, i’m confused. so part of it is a documentary from the WDNTW era, so it’s NOT the same material as Start The Machine documentary then, right?

  • ShadowDJ89

man if i didn’t know angels and airwaves sucked i might think that this could be pretty cool.

  • madne$$

    yeah, fuck that shit lol

  • david galvan

Why is it free?? cuz it sucks! look at the first 2 ava cds, tom said they would be gods gift to music pretty much, and they let down big time, he should really quit ava already.

  • ajay

    hahhaah I agree with Kay!

  • me

stop the fucking pointless nagativness ‘kay’ and ‘nickp2942′ tbh AVA are a great band with some great songs Blink are back now theres no exscuse to hate on them anymore.

  • Delorean182

OMG. Why would I be excited at all? This was supposed to come out years ago. I don’t even care anymore.

  • James

Give the man a break, he s doin blink, if u dont like AVA fuck it, but lots of people do so stop complaining u little assholes, at least AVA has gone further than +44 xD

  • Kay

I wasn’t slating AVA I was laughing at the fact that Toms “description” of the film actually says pretty much nothing. it gives no indication what so ever of what it is. it’s hilarious.

  • Droncz92

As great as AVA is, I really wish Tom would stop dicking around and stick with Blink.

I have a feeling this Blink thing is going to be short lived.

  • canofan42

Honestly, I don’t understand the hatred for AVA. They are a phenomenal band. There is so much emotion put in to every song, and the lyrics are breath-taking. I, for one, cannot wait until the release of this album. Their first 2 albums have been spectacular in my opinion, and I don’t expect any less.

If you don’t like AVA, that’s your opinion. But keep in mind that others do like them, and please respect others’ opinions.

Tom said he’s 100% committed to Blink, but he’s going to continue Angels & Airwaves. Stop with the hatred. It’s completely uncalled for.

  • Kyle

If this was Mark speaking, everybody would love this idea…but noo, everybody hates Tom..

  • http://www.182online.com kieran

“you know what it is.. alot of these people are just now jumping on the we hate tom bandwagon, Ive been hating tom since 1995, im old school hating tom”

HAHA jk. I love Tom. He gets too much shit.

  • Josh Borland

    AvA blow!

  • YoshiKesay

    Fuck blink. AVA is life.

  • Droncz92

I respect Tom the most, when the band split I followed Tom’s work, but Tom does NOT have his head on straight with Blink, I could just tell.

  • blinksum44

tom’s arrogance amazes me sometimes. is he seriously comparing himself to Pink Floyd and U2? don’t get me wrong, i love tom. but sometimes i just can’t stand how full of himself he is. i like ava, but they are not a band that will be remembered 20 years from now.

  • Yea

To the guy who said this will be for AVA subscribers on Modlife only… It will be free for anybody.. the whole point is to increase the fan-base, and corporate underwriting is gonna finance the release.. that is people giving money to this AVA project with the hope of making money off them from a future tour etc..

  • jinxman

As excited as I am for this, Tom is soooooooo pretentious, it’s insane.
I seriously doubt that it will be quite as a amazing as he says it will be, though I think it’ll still be pretty awesome

  • tom

I second kyle completely! If Tom wants to commit to two full time bands then I have my upmost respect for him, as well as running Modlife and Macbeth, I think the man is a genuis. Travis was doing Transplants 6 years ago with blink and nobody complained, and I don’t really like them. AVA is a good band, and what they deliver is really good music. Tom really doesn’t get the respect he deserves, doing all the stuff he does and never letting his fans down.

  • Muttweed182

If this was Mark you would all be like OMG COOOOOL!!!!!!! Tom’s a cool guy and I can’t wait to see this movie and hear the new AVA album.

Yes I like blink more but that doesn’t mean you have to hate AVA. They are a great band that has gone a lot farther than +44 did.

  • blinkfan89

Muttweed shut your mouth if you like ava you have no taste in music AVA sucks……………

  • Gregory

there’s a reason why many people like mark and hate tom…probably because tom was the one that broke up blink and became a weirdo. anywho, i like mark tom and travis…blink i prefer but ava +44 trv$ dj-am it’s all good to me.

  • Mike

…..isn’t this a BLINK 182 website didn’t know that ment ava…ugh i really hope tom focuses more on blink than ava..ava is good…but blink is by far WAYYYYYYYY better

  • justin

I’m a little tired of albums that are rely heavily on synthesizers and ambient noise, then when you see them live half the music is pre-recorded stuff being played over the P.A. Even half the guitar parts are just being blasted out of the sound system from a recording. At least 44 played everything themselves live. I mean Travis even broke his arm because her was playing too bad ass… I’m just sayin’

  • madne$$

AVA would be cool if it was just a side project sort of like box car racer. i liked ava because there was no blink, never thought they were as good or better than blink tho. so now that blinks back, it gets frustrating when tom is constantly talking about ava.. it almost seems like he’s going to go half-assed with blink.. let’s hope not

  • Peepee Caca

My Cat Fuckin Scatched me so i tow him in da fuckin Tash Can!

  • Orian

The reason people are more negative towards Tom is mostly due to that period of time that he admits he was strung out on pain killers and doing PR for WDNTW. That and he’s trying to stretch beyond his talent with AvA at times.

  • j0fiz

@ “Fuck blink. AVA is life.”

    Hahahahaha!!!

    What he said.

  • Blink182+44BoxcarAngels

LOL Kieran thats classic Mark line.. priceless dude! For the ppl sayin AVA flopped they need to check their facts, AVA has definately been succcesful, compared to blinks success they def did flop.. but if u r of an open mind and lookin at it as a new band and not one of a blink 182 spring off to the wrong turn and hating on tom then clearly you cant deny the genious and success of this guy.. i think tom is a legend if he can upkeep both these bands especially since they r so drastically different it will be interesting to see, i have most belief that he can do it and still be true to each band as in blink it will always be blink n have a blink sound cause its 3 guys all with equal power to what is brought to the table, with ava its a bit more deep in meaning and concept and more true to the person that tom is now at that stage of his life..

and doing this for free is also kinda kool totally lookin forward to both.. I’m not gonna slam anyones opinions as ppl have a right not to like a band but at same time most ppl r jus hatin on ava because theyve been hatin on tom for so long and in return directly hates on ava which i find is pretty rediculous.

The arrogance of fans however that say things like tom is arrogant and full of himself now thats rediculous, tom himself stated how he cant believ how fans takes wat he says so seriously, when he speaks of bangin dogs in their shit holes everyone laughs but he says AVA will be the second comin of Christ and all of a sudden ppl look at him n go really? no! Duh! the guys is jus advertising his band and really doesnt believe AVA is gonna be anywhere near that big, he talks shit like he always do. doesnt matter if he in Blink or AVA he’ll still be same shit talkin tom, this article proves it like kay said he uses bunch of fancy words to describe a lot of nothing and he knows that but thats wat makes him Tom Delonge.

  • D-dawg

you can’t say it sucks, none of you even seen it yet! lol some of these douche bag blink fans take it wayy too personal that toms doing 2 bands. lol

  • diarrhea

    hmmm

  • Volcoma7xfan182

I like listening to the one album 44 album did that was actually good than the two half assed AVA albums. And this is in no way a biased opinion I’ve always favored Tom over the other members he’s the reason I picked up a guitar and even started writing music, box car racer is on of my all time favorite albums. But too me AVA has always seemed to forced with me like Tom is trying to hard. The lyrics are corny as if they’re trying to b something life changing and revolutionary, but can’t quite be that. Sorry fir rambling bcuz I love Tom delonge he is my all time idol. But Ava just isn’t him and u can tell it’s not when u listen to it. Which doesn’t look good musically

  • Bleh

This will be great! go tom!

  • Sam

people listen the fuck up because i have all the answers…

AVA is falling apart… I honestly think it would have gone the same way as +44 if Tom wasn’t so delusional, anybody heard of Social Distortion? Atom just joined them ay, you know what happend last time Atom was in 2 bands? He quit one, and I know which band I’d rather be part of, like seriously all of AVA’s songs sond the same, they suck live and critics hate them… add the fact that it would suck to never be treated as an equal because Tom is always the one there to take the spotlight.

Also the fact that Tom wants more than anything to be in the biggest band in the world… BLINK WAS one of the biggest bands in the world and with all the money everybody is throwing at this tour I think theres a good chance that they will be pretty big again once their new album drops next year and eventually its gonna be a situation where AVA may not officially disband but I don’t think that Tom or anyone for that matter is ganna be paying any serious attention to it… like a certain band named after a calling code…

  • Jamey

    For some reason… I miss plus 44… >_>

  • http://b182.com/ddryl ddryl

blink 182 yea baby!!!! cant w8 for the new sound (well same as last album ish) i hope tom dosent feel the need to do ava now he knows blink has grown up and he dosnt have to go back and write e.o.s or t.o.y.p.a.j. style music as fuckin amazinin as they are because lets face it there in there l8 30s now and cant realy sing about gf breakups but glad they still have there personalitys they always have had. its goin to be like last album but improved because theres a few new styles eachother have i just know its gona be BIG! and FUCKING AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!! CANT W8!! AHH

  • ricky

at least he said both bands are a necessary thing, this shouldnt really be news here though. leave it to the ava fansites and we wont have all this negative shit going on.

  • Rob

I’m sorry but putting something AVA does in the same category as Pink Floyd, U2 and Radiohead is ridiculous.

  • Nick

agree with madne$$. i mean, i “get” that tom sort of needs ava to project his serious side but really, ava can be unnessecarily over the top at times and it gets really annoying. i have to admit i was one of the tom haters when blink went on “hiatus” but im starting to appreciate ava a little more. though like many people, i wish he wouldnt focus on it so much

  • Mike

I would love for tom to be in another band mark is always busy and it is okay that trav does alot of other stuff …but it would be cool if he was in a good band. I cant stand that shit

  • Julia

I respect your opinion if you like AVA. But that doesn’t mean i have to like them. I presonally think they are corny. I think Tom tries too hard in AVA just so he can prove himself as a serious artist (which he doesn’t prove any such thing through AVA) and that the lyrics are superficial. In my opinion, Tom needs to ditch the angels shit and stick with Blink where he actually acts like a normal human being.

  • Justarockstar

Been a huge blink fan for the past 11 years I own all side CDs boxcar 44 and the two ava CDs and all I can honestly say is that tom is just tryin to do his own thing but with his coments it’s hard for people to take his music seriously. Building his band up for failure is the only thing tom knows how to do well. Yea i’m a Mark fan but that’s only cause doesn’t talk all this crap about he projects he is more modest and level headed. If tom actually cared bout h music

Instead of.Trying to be the biggest name in the industry then maybe he fans would respect him more but I guess that’s too much to ask
